CM Punk dropped a bombshell last night at UFC 181 when he announced that he had signed a contract to compete in the octagon following the footsteps of Brock Lesnar. You didn’t think that he was going to sign and no one was going to react to the news did you? Rey Mysterio commented on Instagram stating, “Awesome to see my homie Punk at UFC 181 announcing his new career as a UFC fighter! Congrats & wish him the best… Kick some ASS homie!.” Jim Ross took to Twitter to say, “Congrats on @CMPunk signing apparently w/ @ufc is he going to fight? What weight? Will sell PPV’s w/o question. Smart biz by @danawhite.” Everyone seems to get it and we all know that CM Punk will definitely be a main event draw for the UFC and Dana White.
Speaking of Dana White, White revealed to everyone that Punk is looking to fight 185, but is open to 170lbs as well and that it could take six to seven months before we actually see a fight with Punk in it. He also said, “He wanted to fight here. He wanted to give it a shot, so we gave him an opportunity. It’s not like Brock Lesnar. We’re not going to throw the kitchen sink at him. Lesnar had a wrestling background. (CM Punk) going to fight a guy who is 1-0, 1-1, 2-1 — something like that. He’s been coming to fights for a long time and after his WWE contract was up, he called me and said he wanted to give it a shot. I said, ‘All right. We’ll give you a shot.'” UFC Woman;s champion Ronda Rousey expressed her excitement over the announcement simply stating, “Can’t Wait.” There are a couple of people however that are obviously not happy to see that CM Punk is the latest wrestler to crossover. Nate Diaz simply asked the question why on Twitter while Michael Bisping has been ranting and raving all day since the announcement. Here is the latest:
He isn’t the only guy who has ever called out CM Punk to a fight in MMA, we all remember the Green Power Ranger (Jason David Frank) once called out CM Punk and he wants to be Punk’s first opponent. He might have to wait because there is a long list of guys going to Twitter to express an interest in fighting Punk like Derek Brunson, Al Iaquinta, but the tweet below from Colby Covington is the best I have seen:
