You simply can not have a countdown to Wrestlemania without having what might be considered the single most important match in Wrestlemania history. Of course, I am talking about the main event from the Pontiac Silverdome that saw Champion Hulk Hogan take on his greatest opponent to date in André the Giant. André the Giant to this point in history had never been defeated by anyone, but the Hulkster was up to the task as he face the giant in front of 90,000 plus fans in the Silverdome. Of course, André the Giant came down to the ring with the weasel Bobby “The Brain” Heenan who was the giants manager. Mr. Baseball Bob Uecker was the guest ring announcer for the match and Mary Hart was the guest timekeeper.
As Jesse “The Body” Ventura said in his commentary that this was the most important match in sports entertainment history and he was right because it was the biggest match in history. Right from the get go, Hulk tried to scoop slam the Giant, but he couldn’t lift the man up and André the Giant landed right on top of him. It looked as if Hogan had injured his back trying to lift the Giant. André the Giant would begin to dominate most of the match never being knocked off his feet at all and he used his size to his advantage which was a smart game plan. Eventually, his luck would run out as he threw Hogan in an Irish whip and when he tried to lay the boot on Hogan, Hogan would move out of the way. He would then hit André with a clothesline that knocked the Giant off his feet for the first time in the match. Then Hogan would deliver the bodyslam heard all over the world as he successfully scoop slammed the 520 lb challenger and dropped him setting up the leg drop. After Hogan dropped the leg drop, he pinned the Giant for the 1-2-3 and the biggest win in Wrestling history. To me, this was one of the most important matches in Wrestling history because it was the greatest match and it represented everything that was great about sports entertainment. It made everyone want to be a WWE superstar after they watched this. So, I want to thank Hulk Hogan and André the Giant for the memories that will live on forever whether it be on DVD, VHS, or even the WWE Network.
