For today’s Countdown To WrestleMania 31 match, we are travelling back to WrestleMania X8 (18 for those that don’t understand that) which emanated from the Skydome in Toronto, Canada. It was an arena that held epic matches before like Hulk Hogan going up against The Ultimate Warrior which still may be one of the greatest matches of all time. But at WrestleMania X8, it was a battle of the best of generations as Hulk Hogan, the king of the golden era of the WWE took on one of the all time greats of The Attitude Era in The Rock. For so many people, this was a dream match that everyone wanted to see and it happened. It was dubbed Icon Vs Icon as it was Hulk Hogan’s first WrestleMania in nine years and his tenth appearance overall. Everyone thought that The Rock was clearly going to get all the cheers, but a huge amount of the Canadian crowd cheered for Hogan.
Both men right from the beginning were trying to one up each other with Hogan getting the first one after he tossed The Rock to his back out of a collar and elbow tie up. Hogan would continue to taunt The Rock with a shoulder block after The Rock had gotten himself out of headlock. The Rock was finally able to one up Hogan with a flying fist that put Hogan on his behind. Both men traded advantages throughout the match as both threw everything they had each other. It was impressive that Hogan was able to hang with The Rock. At one point, Hogan side stepped the Rock sending him right into the referee knocking out the ref. With the referee down, The Rock slapped on the sharpshooter onto Hulk, but the referee was down. When The Rock out of frustration tried to wake up the ref, Hogan would take advantage and he would hit the Rock with a low blow and he followed it with a Rock bottom. The Rock of course would kick out of the pin. The two would respectively try their finishing moves, but both would kick out of the pinfall attempts. Finally, The Rock would hit Hogan with two rock bottoms and a people’s elbow for the win.
