Chris Benoit, Countdown To Wrestlemania, Into The Vault, Montel Vontavious Porter, MVP, Road To Wrestlemania, Sports Entertainment, WreestleMania 23, Wrestlemania, Wrestling, WWE, WWE Network, WWE United States Championship
The WWE may not recognize one of the wrestlers I have chosen for today’s Countdown To WrestleMania match and I can’t say that I don’t blame them. Chris Benoit committed a disturbing and ugly crime that will forever taint his legacy. I was a huge fan of Chris Benoit when he was in WCW and the WWE and I was a huge fan of his finishing move, The Crippler Crossface and a fan of his wrestling style. He was tough and rugged and his matches were never pretty. At WrestleMania 23, he took on a young upstart by the name MVP (Montel Vontavious Porter) and Benoit’s United States Championship was on the line in front of the 80,000 plus at Ford Field in Detroit. Throughout the beginning of the match, MVP was hanging with the mat wrestler as he was exchanging various headlocks and holds with Benoit. Benoit in the beginning tried to lock in his signature submission move, but that was blocked.
He then tried to deliver a German suplex, but MVP countered sending Benoit to the outside of the ring. The two were even exchanging submission moves, but both were countering each other. At one point, MVP was able to gain the advantage in the match by working on the shoulder to try and prevent Benoit from locking in the crippler crossface. Anytime Benoit tried to gain an advantage, MVP was right there to stop him as he continued to work o the shoulder. After a failed attempt at once again locking in the crippler crossface, he would hit the three German Suplexs followed by a flying headbutt from the top rope. He would then cover MVP and he would score the 1-2-3 and the win retaining his United States Championship. It’s a shame what happened because two months later, the heinous crime would occur.
