For today’s Countdown To WrestleMania 31 match, I could have chosen to review the once in a lifetime match that ended up becoming twice in a lifetime in the following Mania, but I didn’t want to. Insetad, I chose the match that featured two of the best in the business as far as bringing their “A” game was concerned. It was a battle to figure out exactly who the best in the world was between CM Punk (who was the champion at the time) and Y2J Chris Jericho. In the weeks leading up to the match, Jericho had been taunting Punk by making fun of his family and their personal problems and that had been infuriating Punk. Raw GM at the time, John Laurinaitis walked by Punk in the back and announced that his upcoming match against Jericho had changed a little in the rules. He announced that if CM Punk got himself disqualified at all during the match, he would lose his title to Jericho and you can imagine that Jericho’s game plan changed immediately.
In the beginning of the match, Punk had the opening advantage as he was connecting, but Jericho started implementing his game plan. While in the corner, he would slap Punk right in the face getting Punk to go a little out of control while he cowered in the corner. He would end up repeating it getting Punk so close to being disqualified. Punk would try to hit the elbow, but Jericho intelligently moved to the outside, but suffered a flying clothesline from Punk. While he took Punk off his game by continuing to insult his family, he took advantage hitting a dropkick and he would start to hammer Punk. Jericho had to change his game plan because Punk was not going to fall for the head games. After suplexing Punk to the outside of the ring, Jericho started to work on Punk’s back by targeting it. No matter what Punk tried to do, Jericho was quick to end any advantage by targeting the back. Eventually Punk started to rally, but Jericho did his homework and the both of them would go back and forth throughout the match. At point in the match, Cm Punk tried to deliver a hurricanrana to Jericho, but Jericho was able to counter it into a Walls Of Jericho. Punk was able to gran the rope, but later in the match, he ended up back in the walls of Jericho. It wouldn’t be long before Punk countered that and slapped in the Anaconda vice forcing Jericho to tap out.
