Monday Night Raw in New Orleans was supposed to kick off with a United States Championship handicap match that saw Roman Reigns defend his title against both Universal Champion Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho. That was until Braun Strowman made his way to ringside to make it a 3 on 1 beating. During the beat down, Seth Rollins would make his way to ringside to save the day for Roman. After the ring cleared, Stephanie McMahon made her way down to ringside and ruled that the match would take place later on Raw so that Roman would have no excuses when he lost his belt. When it finally came to defend the title, you had to wonder what kind of shape Roman was in after the beating he suffered. Nonetheless like a true warrior, he made his way down to ringside to try his best to keep the belt and go into the Royal Rumble as US champ. As Jricho and Owens made their way to ringside, they were ambushed by Reigns who at one point tried to lock Jericho in the Shark cage, but Owens came to the rescue.
The match hadn’t even officially started and the duo were punishing Reigns by throwing him against the shark cage and later the steel steps. The numbers game had to be a huge worry for Reigns as it was already making itself known to him. When the bell finally rang, Kevin just started the beat down process on Reigns with clubbing blows to back and midsection. Eventually later in the match, Reigns was able to muster some offense after Jericho tried to drop an elbow from the top rope. But you have to remember that he wasn’t fighting just one guy, but two and it would eventually catch up to Reigns as the veterans used the numbers game to their advantage. For example, after hitting both men with the superman punch, Reigns lined up for a spear. He would eventually hit on Jericho who was initially able to avoid it, but as soon as he went for the cover, Owens was there was to break it up.
In the final moments of the match, Reigns was on the outside where he thought he had taken care of Owens, but as soon as he tried to climb back in the ring, Owens held his leg while Jericho hit the codebreaker. To add insult to injury, Owens would powerbomb Reigns on the ring apron and at this point, Reigns was out. Owens would take the lifeless Reigns, throw him to Jericho who hits him with one final codebreaker, and covers him for the 1-2-3. In his whole entire career, this is the one title that eluded Jericho and now he is finally a US Champion. This match isn’t going to win any awards, but it did have a holy sh** moment with the powerbomb, and it’s a great setup for the storyline at Royal Rumble. It makes me wonder exactly what is the WWE thinking going into the Rumble. Are we going to see Reigns win the championship and head to WrestleMania 33? We’ll just have to wait and see and I am going to give the match an B+ for a final grade. Don’t forget to like our page on Facebook at Facebook.com/MRXPUNCHOUT and follow us on Twitter too.
