For today’s Countdown To WrestleMania 31, I picked a match from WrestleMania XIII that I thought was the best of the night. WrestleMania XIII was held at The Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, IL making it the fourth time a WrestleMania had been held at a certain location and arena for a second time (Madison Square Garden remains the only arena to hold three WrestleMania’s). The match was a submission match between rising star Stone Cold Steve Austin and the excellence of execution Bret “The Hitman” Hart. The two had a budding rivalry that started at Survivor Series and started to boil over all the way to WrestleMania XIII. The special guest referee to the match was Ken Shamrock who was a competitor in the UFC at the time (who knew he would eventually make the switch).
An Iconic Image
The match right from the start was total chaos as Austin attacked Bret when he still had his gear on. The two continued to fight on the outside of the ring where they went all the way into the crowd before heading back towards the ring thanks to Shamrock. When they got to ringside, Hart started to work on Austin’s leg and while he was, he busted Austin open pretty bad with the timekeeper’s table. Later on in the match, Bret was able to lock in the sharpshooter, but much to the surprise of the crowd, Austin was not giving up. In fact, Austin actually passed out from the loss of blood and Hart was awarded the win by KO. What most people do not realize is that this was the actual turning point in Stone Cold Steve Austin’s career as Bret had put him over with the crowd. The WWE’s stock in Stone Cold Steve Austin started to grow more and more after this match as he became the most iconic wrestler of the Attitude Era.
